Why I Turn Things Away

More gets left in the donation pile than ever makes it onto this site. That's not a sales line. It's just the math of running this place. For every ten pieces I pick through at a bin or a thrift run, maybe two make the cut, and plenty of weeks it's closer to one.

People ask what "curated" actually means around here, like it's a dressed-up word for secondhand. It's a short list I run through before anything gets photographed. The fabric has to hold its shape when I stretch it a little between my hands. The seams have to lie flat, no puckering. The stretch, if a piece is supposed to have stretch, still has to be there. A sweater gone limp at the collar, a seam already pulling at the shoulder, a zipper that catches halfway. Those go in the donation bag, not the shop.

I pulled a men's hoodie last week, a tan waffle knit, heavy enough to have real weight in your hands instead of that thin, see-through kind that pills after one wash. I ran my thumb along the ribbing at the cuffs. Still tight. No stretching out, no loose threads at the seams. That's the kind of small, almost boring check that decides whether something goes up as a Curated Pick at $30 or doesn't go up at all. It's listed now, size 2XL, and it genuinely took longer to inspect than to photograph.

Fine is a real category too. Fine goes to donation, where it still does someone some good. Curated means I'd hand it to someone I actually care about and feel good about the price on the tag.

I don't get it right every time, I'm sure. But the standard stays the same whether I'm tired or not, whether it's the first piece of the morning or the fortieth. Keeping that consistent, one person, no shortcuts, is most of what I'm actually selling here.

Every person who ends up with something from this shop deserves that extra ten minutes. I'd rather turn nine pieces away than hand you something I wouldn't keep for myself.

Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
