The Second Look

Most of what I pull off a rack or out of a bin looks like nothing special on the first pass. That's just how it works. You're moving fast, your hands already sorting before your brain catches up, and most of what you touch gets put right back down.

So the trick, if there is one, isn't really about finding good pieces. It's about slowing down enough on the right ones to actually look.

Last week I almost passed over a cropped knit top because the color read as a muddy, forgettable brown before I'd even turned the tag over. Something made me stop anyway, maybe the lace collar stitched on at the neckline, dark and a little formal against the soft knit underneath. I checked the label. Adrienne Vittadini. Most people wouldn't recognize the name scrolling past a hanger, I almost didn't either. But I know construction like that when I feel it, good stitching, real seams, the kind of piece made to be worn for years instead of one season. Excellent condition, size L, under $15. It's listed now if you want a look.

A lot of sourcing comes down to reading, more attention than luck. Reading tags, reading seams, reading how a fabric sits in your hand before you've decided anything about it yet. The best pieces rarely announce themselves. You have to go looking.

I think about that past the racks too, more than I probably should. The people worth knowing aren't always the loudest ones in the room either. Sometimes you just have to stop and look twice.

Every piece that ends up here gets looked at that way, whatever shelf it came off of, however small the label, however easy it would've been to walk right past. Every person deserves that same kind of looking, twice if it takes twice.

Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
