Multi-pocket triple-zip expandable crossbody bag, a secondhand find from GiaNina Gifts

Room For Everything You're Carrying

Somebody asked me once why a reselling shop needs to carry handbags at all, when most of what moves through here is sweaters and jackets and one very determined line of baby blankets. Fair question. The answer is that bags are the one thing nearly everybody is already carrying something in, and I like thinking about what that something is.

Today it's a crossbody bag that showed up in a bin looking almost brand new, the kind of unbranded find that doesn't come with a label to hang a price on, so you just look at it honestly and decide what it's worth. Three zip compartments, room to expand when you need it, straps that actually sit right on a shoulder instead of sliding off every ten minutes. Twenty-four dollars. It's the kind of bag that ends up holding whatever a person's actual day requires: keys, a phone, a granola bar, maybe a kid's inhaler.

That's most of what I think about with this part of the shop. A sweater fits a body. A bag fits a life. It has to have room for the stuff that doesn't photograph well, the practical and the unglamorous and the slightly too much, and still close properly at the end of the day.

I think that's part of why secondhand things end up meaning more to people than new ones sometimes. A brand new bag is empty. A good secondhand one has already proven it can hold what somebody needed it to hold. It belonged somewhere before it got here, and it's going to belong somewhere again.

That's the whole idea behind this shop, more than I probably say out loud enough. Nobody shows up here needing to prove anything first. You don't have to have the right look, the right budget, or the right occasion. You just need somewhere that has room for what you're actually carrying, and a little patience while we figure out if it fits.

So if that's you today, look around a while. No rush.

Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
